Just arrived, already alerted.

Monday morning, an official ceremony was organized in Nantes for the taking office of Fabrice Rigoulet-Roze, the new prefect of Loire-Atlantique and Pays de la Loire.

A few hours later, he received a letter about Nantes airport.

Signed jointly by the region (mostly on the right) and Nantes Métropole (mostly on the left), it aims to warn the senior official of the site who awaits it.

He is far from the first to do so.

Since January 17, 2018, the date of the abandonment of the airport project at Notre-Dame-des-Landes, three prefects have already tried to do so with varying degrees of success.

It must be said that the task is complex: the prefecture must supervise the implementation of the 31 compensation and support measures for the Nantes-Atlantique airport redevelopment project.

To date, around half (17) have been completed according to state services, including the establishment of a curfew on April 8, 2022, contested by local residents who denounce the numerous violations by airlines. .

A list of grievances

An evolution which struggles to hide the shortcomings which concern in particular the sections of the rapprochement of the Nantes basin to the Paris airports or the easier service of Nantes-Atlantique.

So many subjects that bother local elected officials.

Hence their letter to the new prefect.

In it, they express their

“concerns about the future of the airport platform and the territory”

.

In particular, they point the finger at the appointment of the future concessionaire of the airport, which is long overdue:

"The successive postponements operated by the DGAC

(General Directorate of Civil Aviation, editor's note)

lead to a delay of more than a year on the initial timetable stated.”

Also in their sights is the 400 meter extension of the current runway.

“The silence of the State on the demonstration of the relevance of the lengthening of the runway or the consequences of the evolution of the current trajectories does not live up to the commitments made in terms of governance, dialogue and transparency “

, is it written.

The lack of accessibility and connection of the airport with the rest of the territory is also the subject of criticism:

"The improvement of rail links to Paris and the Parisian airports, including the connection with the airport of Orly, with the creation of the TGV station at Pont de Rungis, is struggling to materialize.

A future “exemplary model” airport

In the letter signed by Bertrand Affilé, Vice-President of Nantes Métropole in charge of Transport, and Julien Bainvel, Regional Councilor in charge of Mobility in Loire-Atlantique, elected officials plead for a

"modern airport"

which would be a

" gateway to the Great West"

and a

"factor of economic development and provider of jobs"

.

A modernization which, according to them, must be reconciled

"with the consideration of health and environmental issues, in the light of the nuisances and pollution it generates for the neighboring municipalities and the populations overflown, but also by its unique location, in an urban environment and near the lake of Grand-Lieu

(largest lowland lake in winter in France which is an important migration route, editor’s note)

.

For the two local authorities, the redevelopment of Nantes-Atlantique, seen as an

"opportunity"

, must serve to make this equipment a

"exemplary model"

.

In conclusion, they call on the State to respect

“the territory and its inhabitants”

,

“keep the commitments made”

and

“provide clear and rapid responses”

.

Saying they are open to dialogue, the elected officials remain at the

"disposition"

of the new prefect to discuss the issues related to the modernization of the current airport.

Considering the mail sent, the subjects of discussion will not be lacking.

It remains to be seen whether they will be animated.
