In 2022, the S-Bahn in Munich reached a new low for punctuality.
Will the new interlocking bring the reversal?
Munich – Unfortunately, there are always delays and cancellations on the Munich S-Bahn.
The latest value is almost no surprise: the annual punctuality of the S-Bahn has fallen to a new low: only 90.1 percent of the trains were on time, reports the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) at the request of our newspaper.
So far, 2003 has been the worst.
The S-Bahn is currently a long way from the punctuality values of the past – up to 96 percent.
Delays in the Munich S-Bahn: Slow sections as the cause
One of the main reasons given by Wolfgang Oeser, press spokesman for the BEG, is "faults in the control and safety technology systems and construction work" as well as speed restrictions.
The latter even increased "massively" - a consequence of the Garmisch train accident.
At that time, the railway had ordered a number of speed restrictions in areas with dilapidated concrete sleepers.
The crumbly sleepers are suspected to be the cause of the accident.

At least one source of the problem will be eliminated this year: the old, fault-prone signal box at Ostbahnhof will be replaced by a new one.
Commissioning is planned for the middle of this year.
"In 2023 it will be noticeably better with the new signal box," S-Bahn boss Heiko Büttner promised in an interview with our newspaper last year.
