And now Suzuki: 5 electric models on the way

2023-02-01T08:17:34.835Z

A few weeks after unveiling its first electric concept, Suzuki presents its strategic plan to electrify its model range by 2030

While the automotive industry is rushing to switch to electric drive, there are manufacturers that have been left a little behind, such as Suzuki.

Suzuki is one of the few automakers that remain independent and is considered relatively small, which means its development budgets are limited.

In addition, in the markets where Suzuki is strong there is still not such a great demand for electric drive, but this is also going to change in the coming years, especially in India where Suzuki-Maruti has dominated the market for years.

These changes led Suzuki to reveal a few weeks ago a first electric concept model for a compact recreational vehicle called eVX, which should reach production in about two years.

But at Suzuki they know they can't be satisfied with just that, and have revealed the main points of the new strategic plan that will march the company into the electric age by 2030.

The program refers to the three important markets for Suzuki: Japan, Europe and India.

According to the plan, by 2050 Suzuki will reach zero pollutant emissions in Japan and Europe, but for the Indian market the target date has been extended to 2070. As early as this year, Suzuki will start marketing light commercial vehicles with electric drive in Japan, and by 2030 the company will present six electric models in the home market, Most of them are in the urban Kei category where Suzuki is one of the dominant players.

Suzuki's first electric model in Europe will appear in 2024 and it is expected to be the serial version of the recently revealed eVX concept model.

In total, Suzuki will present 5 electric models, including an electric version of the Jimny, which will allow it to be sold again in Europe as a passenger car.

Europe will also be the market where the share designated by Suzuki for electric vehicles will be the highest, and the intention is to reach 80% of electric vehicles sold in Europe by the end of the decade, with the remainder being hybrid vehicles.

In India, the percentage of Suzuki's electric vehicles expected by the end of the decade will be the lowest, when they predict that only 15% of the vehicles it will sell in the huge subcontinent in 2030 will be electric.
