Police said they were investigating a fatal traffic accident in Tsing Yi on February 1 in which an 80-year-old man died.
At about 6:36 p.m., a 63-year-old male driver was driving a heavy goods vehicle westbound along Chung Mei Road. When it reached Hong Fu House, Cheung Hong Estate, it reportedly lost control and hit the 80-year-old man who was crossing the road.
After the accident, the heavy goods vehicle left the scene.
The man sustained multiple injuries and was sent to Yan Chai Hospital in a coma for treatment. He was certified dead at 7:08 pm.
The male driver was arrested today (February 2) on suspicion of "causing death by dangerous driving", "running away after a traffic accident", and "failing to report a traffic accident". He is currently being detained for investigation.
The special investigation team of the New Territories South Regional Traffic Department is following up the investigation case.
Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has information to contact investigators at 3661-1344 or 3661-1346.
It is understood that the police arrested the driver involved in the case around midnight today (2nd).
The accident happened yesterday (1st) afternoon. A snail truck was driving along Chung Mei Road in Tsing Yi. When it was on its way to the opposite of Hong Fu Building in Cheung Hong Estate, it was suspected to hit an old man who was crossing the road.
The driver of the snail truck continued to drive without stopping. The old man was caught under the car and dragged for a distance of about 15 meters. Then he fell on the road and the snail truck drove away from the scene.
Trailing vehicles revealed incidents.
The old man's head exploded and he fell to the ground dying. He was sent to Yan Chai Hospital by ambulance and was later certified dead.
The old man lay down in a pool of blood after the accident.

An eyewitness, Mr. Chen, recalled that he was driving a private car and was following the snail truck. The car on the opposite lane suddenly sounded its horn. A passer-by yelled "hit someone", and the snail truck drove away.
Chen He saw the old man lying on the road, seriously injured and unconscious, his body was bent and his head exploded, so he called the police for help.
Chen described that the traffic light was green at that time, the speed of the snail car was not fast, and there was no sign of slowing down after hitting the old man. He suspected that the snail car did not intend to cause the accident.
