In Africa, Pope Francis "shocked" by the violence suffered and told by young survivors

On Wednesday, the head of the Catholic Church, visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo, met young victims of the conflicts that have ravaged the east of the country for three decades.


Has a pope ever heard of such atrocities?

On Wednesday, at the nunciature in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, François received a delegation of victims.

He was originally supposed to meet them in Goma, a town in North Kivu, in the east of the country, but the prevailing insecurity there prevented him from celebrating the planned mass in a refugee camp.

In fact, the testimonies of victims heard live by François gave an idea as precise as it is terrible of the unbearable terror they experienced.

Ladislas Kambale Kombi, 17, recounts how his “

big brother was killed

” then adds: “

my father was killed in my presence (…) by men in training pants and military shirts

”.

The young man remembers: “

from my hiding place, I followed how they cut him into pieces, then his severed head was placed in a basket

”.

He says he no longer sleeps and “

does not understand such wickedness, this almost animal brutality

”.
