The
Hollywood Academy
confirmed on Tuesday that the British Andrea Riseborough will maintain her Oscar nomination for best actress, but indicated that it
will change the rules of the promotional campaigns of
the participating films in future editions.
Riseborough's nomination for his work on
To Leslie
had caused surprise because although this independent film was heavily promoted on social networks, its exposure in theaters had been very short (it was in few theaters at its premiere on October 7, the same date on which it was also uploaded to the Internet) and very low box office receipts.
For this reason, after the
nominations
for the 95th edition of the Oscars were announced, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that it was going to review the promotional campaign tactics used by the nominated productions.

"The Academy's goal is to ensure that the competition for the awards is conducted fairly and ethically, and we are committed to ensuring an inclusive award process," the organization said in a statement on Friday, January 27.
Before the controversy, Riseborough and the director, Michael Morris, turned to their friends in the industry to get the film out there.
Actresses such as
Charlize Theron
, Gwyneth Paltrow, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, among other celebrities, promoted independent screenings of the film and more Hollywood stars spoke on social networks about the great performance of the protagonist.

Cancellation?
This sparked a wave of rumors that Riseborough's nomination might be cancelled, as rival campaigns accused the

team of using "aggressive" promotional tactics, according to trade outlet

In response, the Hollywood Academy's Board of Governors debated the issue Tuesday at its annual post-nomination meeting and announced it would not remove the actress from the Oscar race.
"The activity in question does not reach the level that the nomination of the film should be annulled," said the executive director of the Academy, Bill Kramer, in a statement sent to the US press.

However, he also specified that during the investigation carried out, the board found "campaign tactics on social networks" that were cause for "concern" and that they were already dealing with those responsible.
The executive director added the intention of the Academy that there be "respectful, inclusive and impartial campaigns" and advanced that the modifications, which were not specified, will take place after the awards ceremony on March 12.
"The Academy strives to create an environment in which voting is based solely on the artistic and technical merits of eligible films and achievements," Kramer concluded.
Inspired by real events, the dramatic film that did not premiere in Argentina centers on a single mother from West Texas, who wins the lottery and spends it quickly.
