The suitcase novel by its Russian author, Sergey Dovlatov, belongs to autobiographical literature, through which he tells funny stories about his life in his own unique style that distinguishes him from the style of any other writer, due to his skill in weaving his narrative text in a charming way.
The novel, which was translated by Dr. Jawdat Hoshyar, and issued by the Syrian Public Authority as part of the National Project for Translation, tells the story of its hero, a journalist who was forced to emigrate as a result of force majeure, and carries with him an old bag tied with a rope.
The events of the novel, which is located in 179 large pieces, revolve around eight things found in the bag of Dovlatov, who is one of the most popular and read writers in Russia. It also depicts the absurdity of Soviet reality in a simple and clear style in brevity and artistic rhythm.
The suitcase novel is considered a biography of Dovlatov himself, not only because the writer's hero bears his own name, but also because its events took place with the writer.
Sergey Dovlatov, a popular Russian-Armenian writer, was born in Ufa, southern Russia, in 1941. He lived with his family in Leningrad in 1944. He studied literature at Zhdanov University, worked for the students’ magazine at the Naval School, wrote stories and many books. Dovlatov published twelve books and wrote articles for a number of newspapers. He also wrote the book “Concessions”, which deals with his time in the Estonian capital, and other books.
