After the senior faculty at the universities started sanctions about ten days ago due to a dispute over the terms of the lecturers' salaries, the seniors announced that they are responding to the students' request and will suspend them until the end of the exam period. However, they warned of a strike later if no progress was made in the negotiations

The senior faculty at the universities announced today (Wednesday) that it is suspending the sanctions it initiated due to a dispute over the terms of the lecturers' salaries.

This is due to the exam period which is in full swing.

However, the senior officials warned of a further strike if there is no progress in the negotiations.

In a letter sent by Prof. Anat Zaira, the chairman of the coordinating council of the organizations of the senior academic staff in the universities, to the members of the academic staff in the universities, to the student associations and to the heads of the universities, it is stated that the proposals that were presented to the council by the people of the Ministry of Finance "did not express an honest willingness to move forward in negotiations".

Zaira added that the request of the chairman of the national student association and the heads of the associations in the various institutions, to allow the exam routine, was accepted.

"We hope that Shura, Vat and the salary commissioner will be able to take advantage of the coming period for negotiations in good faith, with the aim of signing an adequate collective agreement and preventing the unnecessary harm to students, and the continued harm to the academic staff whose last salary agreement ended over 10 years ago - 3 years," the message said.

"To prevent unnecessary harm to students".

The sanctions went into effect about ten days ago at the Hebrew University, Ben Gurion, Bar Ilan, Haifa, the Technion, Tel Aviv and the Weizmann Institute.

Prof. Zaira said at the time that "the behavior of the university administrations, with the backing of the state authorities, left us no other choice. We are not asking for an addition to the salary base, we only asked to update our salary according to the existing erosion. As long as there is no progress in the negotiations with us, we will be forced to take steps More organizations that will gradually escalate."

The move provoked criticism from the board of heads of the universities, as well as from the students themselves.

In response to the sanctions, the university presidents' committee stated that "for about a year now, intensive negotiations have been taking place with the coordinating council of the senior faculty, with the participation of representatives of the commissioner of salaries at the Ministry of Finance. The representatives of the commissioner have made it clear more than once that the possibility of discussing salary increases depends on a framework agreement between the Histadrut and the state - and such has not yet been signed, And also in the approval of the state budget - which has also not yet passed the Knesset. We suggested to the faculty representatives to hold discussions on other, academic issues, but we were refused time and time again."

It was also reported that ""We deeply regret the decision of the Coordinating Council to take organizational steps and we will not allow the students to be made hostages.

We intend to take all the steps available to us within the legal right of the universities to allow the end of the semester and the exam period as planned."

The National Union of Male and Female Students called on the lecturers to "avoid actions that would harm male and female students first and foremost during a critical period, when the exams are being held, and also examines actions that will lead to an end to the sanctions that harm the students as soon as possible."

At the same time, the association said that it works in full cooperation with the student associations and with all parties concerned with the aim of minimizing harm to students.
