Authorities in the archipelago of Vanuatu today issued warnings following the eruption of an underwater volcano off the archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean.

And the Department of Meteorology and Geographical Hazards in Vanuatu announced that the (East Ebi) volcano, located 68 km from the capital, Port Vila, erupted underwater, asking the local population to beware of any continuous strong explosions and the need to avoid the passage of ships and planes in the eruption area.

The department indicated that the volcano spewed ash up to 100 meters above sea level early this morning, while officials raised the alert status of the volcano to level one on a scale of 1 to 5.

Vanuatu is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
