“I left Paris not to find that”

.

That ?

Driving in circles at night for 45 minutes to be able to park.

"

If it starts again, I'm moving

," exclaims Charlotte, a mother, located rue Branly, in the family district of Procé, in Nantes.

Two weeks ago, residents of this residential area received a letter warning them of imminent parking changes.

We knew it was going to pay off

,” says Sophie, spokesperson for the collective of residents of rue Branly.

This element is not the main reason for their dispute.

These residents are especially unhappy with the new parking space plan and have made this known to the mayor, Johanna Rolland.

In a letter signed by about fifty of them, they are worried about the 50 future locations planned, whereas today, "

there are on average 120 cars parked every evening in front of our houses

".

Currently, there are almost no markings on the ground.

Nantes without a car, it's cute but utopian!

Sophie, spokesperson for the collective of residents of rue Branly

We are asking for more places

”, continues Sophie, mother of three children.

Like many others, his garage is too small to accommodate his vehicle.

“Everyone is for cycling but as a family, we have to keep our car!

You don't go on holiday on a scooter!

".

For her, “

Nantes without a car is cute but utopian

”.

However, she is not anti-ecological.

She sometimes even lends her car to one of her neighbors who has taken up a cargo bike to avoid having two vehicles while others go electric.

In the parallel streets, residents are facing the same problem and have also sent petitions.

As some say, we will pay for a degraded service

,” notes Sophie.

Rue Edison, according to their calculations, there will be 33 places for 81 numbers.

In the rue d'Arsonval, 29 for 68 residences.

“We limit the number of cars without proposing solutions”,

deplores Sophie who fears that the convivial barbecues organized twice a year will give way to scenes of chaos.

She also claims the lack of consultation on the subject.

Yesterday morning she received an appointment response as the new markings began to be carried out in adjacent streets as early as last Friday.

The routes are not final

,” reassures Denis Tallédec, elected municipal official in charge of traffic and parking.

He refuses from the outset the lack of consultation.

I was asked last week.

I'm meeting some locals next week.

And there were presentations at neighborhood meetings.

Those from rue Branly will be heard on March 10, others earlier.

The deputy recalls the course of the town hall: "

to develop uses, to relieve the city of the car to, ultimately, reclaim public space

".

He points out that today, “

we have vehicles parked on the sidewalks, in front of garage entrances.

These are public spaces that don't belong to them, it's illegal

".

He claims to have received encouraging letters from local residents telling him that this development would allow them to go to school with the stroller.

These new measures will come into force on September 1, not before.

"

We will try to find solutions, to transform uses with intelligence and common sense

", continues the elected official.

A common sense that the inhabitants also claim by advancing solutions such as designing parking lots encroaching on the sidewalks, which is not envisaged.

Denis Tallédec is considering the option of adding spaces in front of garages not used by cars.

"

Let's pass these one-way streets [to draw squares on both sides of the road]

", suggests municipal councilor Foulques Chombart de Lauwe, elected from the right-wing opposition.

Last Friday, he met the residents after denouncing their situation on the networks.

"

The ecological transition, it is accompanied, it is explained

", he denounces.

He also intends to address the subject at the next municipal council meeting on February 3.

In the meantime, residents are not the only ones affected.

Place Armand Fallières, a few tens of meters away, Astrid, manager of the Mille et une Couleurs hair salon, dreads seeing the places in front of her window shrink.

The pitches on the cob will be replaced by slotted car parks.

“The squares on the cob will be straightened for more security”

, answers the elected Denis Tallédec.

"

I did not settle in the city center precisely to allow customers to come by car

", laments the shopkeeper.

Installed here for 30 years, she will also have to pay 25 euros per day to park, like an external resident (she lives in Sautron): "

I am not one of the professional categories who can benefit from a subscription

“, she says after calling the services of the town hall.

I was told: you just have to come by bus.

I have no financial solution”

.

Until now, she paid nothing thanks to free parking.

Katia, retired from the neighborhood and signatory of the petitions, is also worried about the increase in prices.

Emmanuel Macron has decided that we no longer have to pay local taxes.

But the city needs subsidies

”.

The annual subscription for Nantes residents is set at 180 euros, but the municipality points out that solidarity pricing exists according to income.

The manager of this hairdressing salon fears that her customers will no longer be able to park.
