A 44-year-old man killed himself in his cell in Lyon-Corbas prison on the night of January 19 to 20, according to information from
Le Figaro
.
He was found hanged in the early morning by round officers, who requested medical intervention, in vain.
"The professionalism and the speed of intervention of the agents as well as the night officer will not change the irremediable outcome"
, regretted the Ufap union in a press release.
Died when guards arrived, the man had been imprisoned for 18 months since the end of December following a conviction for domestic violence.
He was detained alone in a cell adapted for people with reduced mobility in building number 2 of the remand center.
“The suicide of one can lead to others”
In recent years several detainees, often young, have committed suicide in Lyon-Corbas but also in the prison of Villefranche-sur-Saône, where a complaint against the remand center had been filed a year ago after the hanging of a young man.
“It happens regularly and generally in phases,”
commented Verrière, regional director of Ufap.
This was the case in April 2023 in Lyon with 3 suicides in different establishments.
"The suicide of one can lead to others, during festive periods, but also because of family events or after sitting sessions that are difficult to digest
," continues the trade unionist.
In any case, suicide is six times more frequent in the prison population than the French average.
In 2021, the Ministry of Justice counted 122 detainees who committed suicide.
