Global democracy index: Israel drops six places Israel today

2023-02-02T09:42:05.502Z

A report by the British "Economist" dealing with the state of democracy in the world defined Israel as a "flawed democracy" • The reason for the decline in Israel's position: the disintegration of the Bennett-Lapid government and the lack of representation for the Arab minority in the new government • Other countries in the Middle East also dropped significantly in the index

Democracy under global attack:

The annual democracy index of the British "Economist" research institute lowered Israel's rating by six places, in a report that mainly included bad news about the state of democracy around the world.

The reason given for the drop in Israel's score, which for years has been defined by the index as a "defective democracy", was detailed in a document that read: "Israel's deterioration following a slight drop in its score is mainly due to the end of the short government with the participation of Ra'am, which resulted in a slight increase in the rating of Israel, as this was the first time an Arab party took part in the country's government."

"There is also a fear that the new government, which is led by the conservative Likud along with several ethno-nationalist factions, will try to legislate overriding the Supreme Court, which could lead to damage to the separation of powers and danger to civil liberties in the future," the report states. Israel is the only country in the Middle East that is defined by the index as a "damaged democracy", meaning a functioning democratic state with fundamental flaws in its conduct, in the Middle East.

In addition to Israel, Libya and Tunisia also suffered a sharp drop in their democracies index, with the report defining the rule of Tunisian President Case Said as a "deterioration into autocracy." Iran, which is placed at the bottom of the global table, saw a slight increase in its index, strangely due to what was claimed as "public courage" Take to the streets and protest." The change in score refers to the protest against the hijab and religious coercion laws in Madinah, a protest that was brutally suppressed including the execution of demonstrators.

In addition to the Middle East, the report made extensive reference to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia suffered the sharpest drop in score in the report for 2022, this is due to the various measures taken by the regime in the country to harm the freedom to become a citizen of the country since the invasion began.
