The metropolis of Lyon presented this Wednesday its support plan for municipalities to sterilize stray cats.
Currently, the SPA estimates that 60,000 of them are present in metropolitan France.
“
Unsterilized cats can reproduce very quickly: a couple could produce 20,000 individuals in four years
”, indicates Grand Lyon.
A proliferation that has an impact on biodiversity and in particular on bird populations, some of which are in decline.
In France, nearly 75 million birds and 50 million mammals are killed each year by stray cats.
Stray cats took advantage of the Covid
It is in this context that the community has decided to help municipalities regulate their populations of stray cats via aid that will cover 100% of the residual costs of additional sterilizations for a municipality already involved in the subject and 80% for a municipality that would get involved for the first time.
A first budget of €50,000 will be put to the vote during the metropolitan area's permanent committee on February 27.
This sterilization campaign is not the first, but the previous ones were undermined during the confinements linked to Covid, which led to an increase in the population of stray cats.
The metropolis estimates that it is necessary to sterilize 75% of a group to control its dynamics.
