Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stressed the need not to give neo-Nazism an opportunity to avenge its defeat 80 years ago in Stalingrad, adding: “As we defeated it then, we will do that today.”

The Novosti agency quoted Medvedev as saying today, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of victory in the Battle of Stalingrad: “80 years ago today in 1943, on the banks of the Volga River, the Soviet forces won one of the most difficult battles in World War II..and the Battle of Stalingrad ended with a crushing defeat for the Nazi armies. Their commander, Field Marshal Paulus, was captured.

Medvedev continued: “After Stalingrad, the Nazis had nothing to do but retreat all the way to Berlin and Nuremberg, to disappear from existence.”

He added, “Our duty is to remember the lessons of the past, to preserve the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, their courage and dedication to serving and protecting the homeland, and not to give any opportunity for revenge by the forces of neo-Nazism, which we are forced to fight again today. We stopped the enemy and broke it 80 years ago, and it will not succeed.” The enemy today too.

It is noteworthy that the Battle of Stalingrad, which lasted from July 17, 1942 until February 2, 1943, was one of the largest battles in World War II, which changed the course of the war.
