No matter what Martin Kirmayr has done in his life: he has done it with enthusiasm.

This applied to his work as a teacher and later as headmaster of the elementary school in Gmund, as well as to his two great hobbies, sport and art.

With his positive attitude and willingness to support, he has earned respect and esteem.

Martin Kirmayr died unexpectedly at the age of 79.

Sport was Kirmayr's great passion throughout his life.

Beginning with gymnastics at a young age, the native of Haushamer practiced athletics and skiing, and loved surfing.

For Kirmayr, the focus was always on the joy of movement and community - and that into old age.

"He did his sport as long as he could and it was good for him," says his younger son Thomas Kirmayr (54).

His father played volleyball for a long time and enjoyed curling.

"He lived for the sport."

A teacher who was never teacherlike

As a father, he gave orientation and support “in a good way”.

"He was a teacher, but never a teacher," says his younger son.

As in school, he gave positive guidance and aroused enthusiasm.

He met many students from the past and was always happy about what had become of them.

"He cared about the students."

In sports at home

The sport also connected Kirmayr's circle of friends.

So it's no wonder that he was also involved in the SG Hausham club - be it as a competition director or as an organizer of sports festivals.

"So he wanted to give something back." This commitment and fascination for sport also shaped his children.

His older son Martin Kirmayr junior (56) acts as secretary at the district association of the Bavarian State Sports Association.

Great joy as an artist

In contrast to this stands Kirmayr's other passion: art.

He enjoyed creating drawings, watercolors and sculptures, as well as organizing exhibitions for the Hausham art group, for which he was spokesman.

He was fascinated by trying things out and always learning new things himself.

Sudden death after cross-country skiing

So active in life, his death came as a surprise.

As so often, the 79-year-old went cross-country skiing.

When he got home he just collapsed.

As dramatic and sudden as the death of the father and grandfather of six was, it helps the family mourn.

If he had had the choice – both brothers are sure of that – he would have chosen exactly this path out of life.

And the family is comforted by something else: Martin Kirmayr's first great-grandchild, whom he was able to meet shortly before his death, was born just a few days ago.
