It was probably one of the most personnel-intensive rescue operations in recent years in the districts of Erding and Ebersberg - the fire in a locomotive on Wednesday afternoon on the Munich-Mühldorf route.
Erding – The federal police have now announced details of the incident between Unterschwillach and Hörlkofen.
Spokesman Wolfgang Hauner reports that around 1:50 p.m. smoke rose in a diesel locomotive and then a fire broke out.
"According to the current state of investigation, a technical defect in the turbocharger was the cause of the smoke development.
External influence can be ruled out,” reports Hauner.
At this point the train drove through a forest.
The train driver brought it to a stop and smothered the flames with a hand-held fire extinguisher.
However, he was unable to prevent the smoke from wafting through the front carriages via the air conditioning system and being inhaled by passengers.
There were about 150 passengers on the train.
Ten and the train driver suffered from smoke inhalation, four had to be hospitalized.
Due to the initially unclear situation, the Erding integrated control center alerted a large number of rescue workers with their own emergency services and fire brigade on site.
Numerous fire brigades and all available ambulances and emergency doctors were sent to the scene of the fire, and a rescue helicopter also landed there.
An injured collection point was set up near Hörlkofen.
The route was closed until 4 p.m., the train was towed by a second locomotive to Markt Schwaben, where the occupants got on or off.
Train services were severely impacted throughout the afternoon.
The extent of the damage has not yet been determined.
Investigate the railway and the federal police.
