The world's whales were slaughtered by Soviet ships for no reason other than commitment to economic goals

Although I don't look like a tree-hugging, tofu-eating, protesting-with-Greta type, let me tell you that I have a big soft spot for whales and their welfare.

Moby Dick, the great parable about obsession and abyss in the soul, is also an amazing and captivating adventure story.

Imagine someone sailing a small armada of ships to the edge of the earth to kill an animal the size of a school bus.

And why are whales suddenly in the middle of a hot current affairs?

Because the following story is doubtful if you are familiar with it, and it has something to shed light on utopias and their meaning, and even, at the end, a link to the opinion section in "Haaretz".

Between the years 1946 and 1970, the whales in the world disappeared completely.

No one knew why.

An international treaty from 1946 set limits on commercial whaling, yet their numbers have greatly decreased.

The scientists wondered who was responsible for one of the fastest declines in animal population history: what happened to the whales?

Did they kill themselves on the beach of the Labor Party?

Did they suffer from a mysterious disease that killed them?

The reason for the disappearance of the whales was that the USSR secretly sent four huge whaling fleets. They scoured the oceans and killed every whale they came across. 2,710 fin whales in the southern hemisphere.

In fact, the Soviets killed 18 times the number they reported.

In '59 alone they slaughtered more than 13 thousand.

In total, the Soviet whaling fleet secretly killed about 180,000 more than was officially reported.

Absolute bloodbath.

The whales were killed so quickly that the carcasses rotted before they could be processed.

And not only the great fin whales - along the way the Russians killed thousands of unreported whales of other species.

And all the while the Soviets were exterminating the whales, their useful idiots in the West killed and praised them

It was an elaborate and daring deception: Soviet captains disguised ships, tampered with scientific data and misled international authorities for decades.

The authorities in the USSR carefully altered documents and falsified numbers to hide the true extent of the hunting operation. The killing continued at a steady pace, as did the cover-up.

In fact, there is evidence of the true extent of Soviet whaling only thanks to a scientist named Dmitry Tormusov, who secretly kept copies of the The two-year harvest in his potato cellar.

And now for the interesting part.

Why did they do this?

Why did the USSR, the progressive power that the entire left in the West admired for its Marxist progress, exterminated almost the entire species?

Here it should be noted that environmental crimes are, in general, the most rational of crimes.

The advantages are clear: the risk is minimal.

Illegal hunting, illegal logging and littering do not carry a heavy penalty.

But the Soviet whaling did not follow such logic.

Unlike Norway and Japan, the other major whaling countries at the time, there was no real demand for these products in the USSR. After the blubber was cut off for oil, the rest of the mammal was left at sea to rot.

"The Truth About Soviet Whaling: A Memoir", is the memoir of Alfred Berzin, one of the scientists who accompanied the Russian Navy.

Berzin wrote that the hunting fleets were sent to kill whales for no reason other than to say that they had killed them.

They were motivated by an obligation to deliver vague line items in the five-year plan that drove the Soviet economy.

A plan established with little consideration of the real demand of the USSR for whale products.

"Whalers knew that no matter what, the plan must come true!", wrote Barzin.

The characteristics of the Soviet system - its irrationality, its cruelty, its penchant for crime - were distilled into bloody madness.

Barzin compared the Soviets to the Japanese.

The Japanese are motivated by local demand for whale meat, "I don't have to say this as a scientist," he wrote, "but you can understand the difference between motivated crime and unmotivated crime." Japanese whalers used 90 percent of the victims. The Soviets, according to Brazil, barely 30 percent was used. The crews would routinely return with whales left to rot, "which could not be used for food.

No one saw it as a problem."

The USSR had no use for whale meat. So what? Soviet economic planners set quotas based on historical whaling as a percentage of the fishing industry, regardless of its actual utility. When Soviet scientists complained to the Minister of Fisheries that their grandchildren would live in a world without whales, he replied, "Your grandchildren They are not the ones who can remove me from my job."

Russian bureaucrats couldn't care less about a whale-free world.

They were afraid of the K.G.B.

Yes, yes, the world's whales were slaughtered for no reason, other than to fall in line with the economic plan of the progressive, progressive communist power.

All the captains of the Soviet whaling fleet knew the story of Alexander Dudnik, the captain of the Aleut, who received the Order of Lenin in 1936. A year later he failed to meet the goals of the hunt, so the NKVD arrested him and tortured him for being Japanese agent.

This event was on the minds of the rabbis, as Barzin wrote, "The plan - at any cost!"

Many Soviet sailors were faced with a choice: to be persona non grata at home, or criminals abroad. Precisely the captains of the ships that most flagrantly violated international whaling regulations were awarded the badges of honor of the Communist Party. "Lies have become an indisputable part and perhaps Even to the foundation of Soviet whaling," Barzin concluded.

And all the while the Soviets were exterminating the whales, their useful idiots in the West were killing and praising them.

Environmental organizations that demonstrated against the Western powers were funded by the Russians. The level of cynicism is unimaginable. But that's how it is with the utopia of equality and the attempt to manage economic reality on the science of Marxism. The result is lies, persecution and death.

Last Wednesday, Anat Kam, the editor of the opinion page of the "Haaretz" newspaper Sotum Hafiyy, published the following defense of the retiring chairman of the Bar Association, Avi Himi: "Stalin defeated Hitler only because he was as bad as he was, and the Allies turned a blind eye to the atrocities of his regime Because there was a greater evil forever.

We now have a greater evil to defeat, and we need Himi with us, even if before joining the struggle he did wrong things."

Did you understand?

Stalin is better than Hitler.

Better than Bibi.

So what if he slaughters whales.

After all, he is with us against the capitalists.

or the bibists.

were we wrong

We will fix it!
