Opinion The day after the reform Israel today

2023-02-02T20:19:32.733Z

There is no deliberate hand behind the protest, but a genuine desire of Israeli patriots to prevent serious damage to the Zionist vision

For so many years our fathers and mothers dreamed of a Jewish and democratic state in the Land of Israel.

Now, when most of the people living under our direct and indirect rule are not Jewish, and when people who despise the values of democracy seek to turn Israel into an authoritarian state according to the chilling model of Hungary, the American Secretary of State should come to Jerusalem to remind us why we have gathered here.

He talks to us about the most basic things.

He explains that without a two-state solution, Israel will not be democratic and Jewish.

He talks about the rights of the minority and the freedom of the press, and we promise that we will be good children and preserve the values of democracy, while in the factory operating in the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, they work in three shifts to turn our democracy into a facade.

It suddenly dawns on us that everything is intimately connected: the unwritten alliance with the USA is not built only on interests. We are not Saudi Arabia or Egypt. Israel is not just a strategic junction with which it is important to maintain contact. It is truly the only democracy around, and it is ranked (in "The Economist") Three places above the USA in the totality of its democratic characteristics.

For now.

The implementation of the "reform" is closely related to investments.

Every investor wants to know what will happen if there is a dispute between him and the object of his investment.

It is agreed in advance in which court the dispute will be heard, and this is an issue that is not easy to agree on.

Who are the investors who will agree that the Hungarian court will decide between them and their owners?

Shackle the court (so that Mr. and Mrs. Ben Gabir, Smotrich, Struck, Maoz and their elected friends can appoint its judges, annul its judgments, and prevent it from discussing injustices and illusory governmental decisions) will turn Israel into a country whose court does the government's word, and is not considered One that can be trusted.

The exposure of our soldiers to arrests in the world apparently does not bother those whom the army was unwilling to recruit due to their criminal past, or those whose military service was only symbolic.

But those young people who will be sent by irresponsible leaders to commit acts that are, seemingly at least, violations of international law, will lose the only legal tool in front of the law enforcement agencies in the world.

If until now the world has accepted the claim that the Israeli court is independent, seriously discussing the accusation of members of our security forces with violations of the law, then the extreme nationalist elements, who seek to weaken the court, are the ones who preemptively harm the immunity of these security personnel.

Behind the protest of the former CEOs, of the heads of the economy, of the economics lecturers, of the students, there is no deliberate hand, but rather a genuine desire of Israeli patriots to prevent serious damage to the Zionist vision. And if alongside the damage to democracy, the voices calling for the familiar solutions return: the death penalty, punishments collectives, opacity, demolitions, deportation, taking citizenship, and the like, and if all these decisions are not subject to judgment by the High Court, or if the High Court rules and the superseding clause prevails - not even America will be able to save us. And it

may be that the fears are exaggerated. It is possible that people They will not rush to withdraw their deposits from the banks.

It may be that investors will not give up their investments in Israel so quickly.

It may be that the world will not rush to arrest reserve soldiers and reserve officers and captains past and present.

It may be that the Supreme Court will find ways to be relevant, even if its space of freedom is reduced.

It is possible that the media will find underground ways to publish what it has to say, or it will be able to convey messages with hints.

But if we wake up tomorrow morning and see Hungary instead of our image, we won't know where to turn.

were we wrong

We will fix it!
