The Russian ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, confirmed that the US approach aimed at confronting Russia and China is a strategic mistake.
Antonov said in an interview with Russia Channel One: “The Americans have committed an important strategic mistake. They started a conflict with two nuclear states, or they are trying to fight on both fronts. There are reports from the Pentagon on American TV channels that Washington is preparing for war with China for the sake of Taiwan. There are no red lines, although they always talk about their commitment to the One China principle.”
Antonov pointed out that the administration of US President Joe Biden is not interested in Ukraine and its people, so what it cares about is preventing Russia from achieving victory, and using this in the electoral race.
Antonov said: “In the political circles in Washington, they do not hide the goals of their war on Ukrainian soil, which is to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, and to exhaust our country.” They can stop and they must move on, and they must continue to supply the Ukrainian army with various weapons.”
Antonov continued, “The Americans are well aware that they will not be able to win with weapons alone, and with the help of fuel for war, Ukrainian soldiers.”
The Russian ambassador criticized that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken sent a message to his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, through their Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, to avoid contacting him personally.
Antonov indicated that the United States is not yet ready to hold talks with Russia, based on equality and mutual respect, but rather only wants "Russia to crawl on its knees in the political and economic sense."
Antonov explained that the United States is circumventing the restrictions imposed by Russia on hiring cadres at the US Embassy in Moscow, in response to a move by Washington.
Antonov said: “It is clear that the Russian restrictions are not fully adhered to by the Americans and they are trying to circumvent them. According to official data, more than 130 employees work in the US embassy today, and they are not considered US citizens.”
It is noteworthy that Russia imposed a ban on hiring the US Embassy in Moscow for Russian citizens and citizens of third countries, following the inclusion of the United States on the list of unfriendly countries, in response to Washington's expansion of sanctions against Russia and its expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats in April 2021.
