Some private letters from Lady Di go up for auction in which she regrets her "ugly and desperate" divorce with Carlos of England

On February 16, an amazing collection of 32 missives and personal cards written by the Princess of Wales to two of her closest friends between 1995 and 1996 will go on sale.


In a handwritten note, the following can be read: “I apologize for not going to the opera today.

I am going through a very difficult time and the pressure is serious and it comes from all sides.

Sometimes it's just too hard to keep my head up and today I'm on my knees and just wish this divorce would go through as the potential cost is tremendous."

The note is signed, simply, by Diana.

Although the world knows her as Diana of Wales or, affectionately, as Lady Di.

The letter is dated April 26, 1996, just a few months before the divorce process from her husband, the then Prince Charles, was finalized on August 28, 1996, and was sent by the princess to her friends. Susie and Tarek Kasem.

On February 16, the couple will auction this and other letters and cards from their personal correspondence with Diana de Gales,

"In 2023, the ownership of these moving documents is a responsibility that the Kassems do not want to pass on to their children or grandchildren," they point out from the auction house Lay's Auctioneers, which is located in the port town of Penzance, on the Cornish peninsula. .

Diana of Wales and the Kassem couple met in August 1995, during one of the princess's frequent visits to the Royal Brompton Hospital in London.

Since then, the couple have been enormously supportive of the princess, as evidenced by correspondence in which Diana is often grateful to them.

In a letter dated December 2, 1995, just one day after Queen Elizabeth advised Charles and Diana to divorce, she writes to the Kassems: "I may have been described as a butterfly, but I don't want to fly away from this lovely family".

She means the Kassems.

Diana also thanks them, on several occasions, for being there when she needs it and listening to her at all times.

In another letter, she jokes about how great it is to be part of a threesome.

"Susie and Tarek feel extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to get to know the princess so closely," they write from the auction house.

“Throughout their friendship, the Kassems were always amazed at the incredible effect Diana had on anyone she came into contact with, whether on the street, in the theater, in a restaurant or anywhere else.

According to the main British tabloids, the 32 letters and notes from the princess could reach 90,000 pounds (around 101,000 euros at current exchange rates) during the auction.

It is not the first time that part of Diana of Wales's intimate correspondence has been put up for auction.

In 2021, the same auction house put up for sale a collection of around 40 letters sent by the princess to her friend Roger Bramble between 1990 and 1997. The highest figure for a single lot was 7,200 pounds (about 8,142 euros). by a 1996 letter that described Queen Elizabeth as “the boss”.

Another 1996 missive, which described how Roger Bramble was "a very welcome distraction from the mundane activities associated with an impending divorce", was sold for 6,500 pounds (about 7,300 euros).

The sale of all correspondence reached 67,900 pounds (76,800 euros).

Other objects, such as the 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo S1, with which Lady Di was often photographed at the wheel accompanied by her two children,

or the amethyst and diamond pendant worn on several occasions by the princess also found buyers at recent auctions.

The car was sold for 722,500 pounds (817,020 euros).

The necklace was recently acquired by Kim Kardashian for 63,800 pounds (about 200,000 euros) at auction at Sotheby's, doubling the starting price of the object.
