Almost a year after the tragedy, the shadow that surrounds him is still as strong.

On February 11, 2022, Hervé Neau, mayor of Rezé (Loire-Atlantique) ended his life in the premises of his town hall.

The next day, an investigation was opened for “moral harassment”.

The reason: on his desk had been found a letter in which the city councilor explained the reasons for his action, citing the receipt of several malicious letters against him.

A crow had therefore aimed and targeted him.

For the time being, despite the investigations carried out, his identity remains unknown.

She could be forever.

“The progress of the investigation is not good”

, recognized this Thursday, Renaud Gaudeul, the public prosecutor of Nantes, during a press conference.

“There are no avenues left to explore.

The investigations are at a standstill.

They could only resume if new elements were brought to our attention

,” he added.

Despite this lack of evidence, the investigation remains open and has not been dismissed.

Because there is a

“weak hope”

of finding the author of the malicious mails, conceded the prosecutor who gave some details on this drama with mysterious contours.

Among them, the number and content of the letters.

14 typed letters

A total of 14 letters targeted Hervé Neau.

The first dated back to the beginning of January 2022, about a month before his suicide.

All were typewritten.

They were addressed to him personally or to members of his entourage, in particular from the town hall.

“Eight were found in his office.

Five others were received on the day of his death at the town hall of Rezé and another was sent to a journalist from Ouest-France”

, detailed Renaud Gaudeul.

These letters, which included

"many intentional or unintentional spelling mistakes",

were all printed from the same device.

“ Highly

technical investigations”

determined it was an

“HP Color LaserJet CP1515” printer

, a

"consumer model"

, dating from July 2010.

As for the accusations, they were aimed at

“various facts and gestures relating to the private life”

of Hervé Neau that the latter did not wish to make public.

In his farewell letter, the city councilor explained that his final gesture was due to the malicious letters received.

“The facts related were very precise and made it possible to make a direct or indirect link with the town hall

, revealed Renaud Gaudeul.

The investigation confirmed the facts as they were factually expressed, which confirms that the crow had a very good knowledge of the mayor and the organization of the town hall of Rezé.

No criminal act attributable to the mayor

On the other hand, a point thickens even more the part of enigma of this file.

"No fact reproached by the crow to the mayor was of a criminal nature"

, revealed Renaud Gaudeul, who specified that the texts were

"not blackmail"

.

He took as an example the accusation of a private trip financed at the expense of the town hall:

“If the trip took place, the rest is inaccurate.”

Faced with the complexity of the case, the investigators multiplied the leads.

They looked at the personal, political, friendly and family entourage of Hervé Neau.

“All the open doors have closed”

, comments the prosecutor who mentioned

“many hearings of respondents”

without giving the precise number.

Even the indication of an individual, named directly by Hervé Neau in his last letter, was not conclusive:

“This is the first track that we have explored without elements being able to be retained later.”

As for the technical investigations, if they allowed progress, nothing was decisive: no fingerprint, no DNA.

"No search has made it possible to find the present or past trace of the famous printer"

, added Renaud Gaudeul.

If the investigation into the disappearance of Hervé Neau is making little or no progress, the inhabitants do not forget their mayor.

A public tribute will be paid to him on Saturday February 11.

"It is open to everyone

," the town hall said in a statement.

The meeting is fixed at 11:30 am at the Balinière park.
