Zhixi, a half-year-old baby girl suffering from acute heart failure, successfully received a heart transplant from a mainland cross-border donation at the end of last year. She
is still hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Hong Kong Children's Hospital.
Lu Chongmao, Director of the Medical and Health Bureau, visited Zhixi and met with her parents today (2nd), and also asked the medical team to learn about her latest situation.
He said that he is pleased to see that Zhixi's condition continues to improve and her recovery is progressing satisfactorily.
Lu mentioned that the country’s human organ donation work has attracted international attention in recent years. Although there is currently no mechanism for Hong Kong to share the body’s organ donation with overseas medical institutions, including the Mainland, Hong Kong’s laws have always allowed individual cross-border organ approvals based on individual needs. Importation and transplantation, emphasizing that the acquisition and distribution of human donated organs, as well as cross-border transportation, in China and Hong Kong are strictly regulated by international standards.
He said that due to the impact of the epidemic in the past three years, the number of organ transplants in Hong Kong has not been satisfactory, and even showed a downward trend, calling on the public to register their willingness to donate organs.

In the Mainland, medical institutions routinely share deceased organ donations, but Hong Kong's laws have always allowed individual cross-border organ importation and transplantation to be approved according to the needs of individual cases.

Lu Chongmao said that although the regulations, distribution systems, and clinical treatment of patients are different between the two places, there are strict regulations on the acquisition, distribution, and cross-border transportation of donated human organs in accordance with international standards.
He said that in the past three years, due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, the number of organ transplants in Hong Kong has not been satisfactory, and has even shown a downward trend. Currently, there are nearly 3,000 citizens waiting for organ transplants. He appeals to the public to register for organ donation on the Central Organ Donation Register wishes, and make them clear to the family.
