São Paulo, Brazil (CNN) --

A Brazilian senator said that former President Jair Bolsonaro attended a meeting last December to annul the results of the 2022 presidential election, which gave victory to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. .

Senator Marcos do Val said in a press conference on Thursday that both he and Bolsonaro were in a private discussion on December 9, which was organized by Bolsonaro's ally and then-congressman Daniel Silveira.

According to do Val's account, Silveira proposed a plan to discredit the elections, in which he suggested that do Val secretly organize and record a meeting with the president of the Superior Electoral Tribunal and Supreme Court judge, Alexandre de Moraes.

Do Val claimed that he was told to incite the judge to say things that would cast doubt on the validity of the vote and the neutrality of the electoral court.

He also revealed screenshots of his WhatsApp messages with Silveira about the meeting and the plan.

Describing Bolsonaro's role in the conversation, do Val said the then-president remained silent on the proposal and did not discourage it.

He also said that he was under the impression that there was an agreement.

Do Val assured: “It was Daniel (Silveira) who spoke.

I said I would think about it later and get in touch."

"It was very clear that he was in a position to manipulate and make (Bolsonaro) accept his idea, if a senator accepted the mission," added do Val.

Silveira's legal team did not respond to CNN's request for comment.

According to do Val, he ultimately met de Moraes on December 14, but instead of recording the meeting, he warned the judge about the plot.

De Moraes has not commented publicly on the matter.

On Thursday, de Moraes, who is in charge of the investigation into the January 8 riots, ordered do Val to give a statement to the Federal Police within five days, according to a Supreme Court document.

Do Val also reported that Silveira told him that the plan involved the Brazilian Institutional Security Office (GSI), responsible for the president's security.

The GSI would provide secret agents and recording devices to do Val.

The Brazilian Intelligence Agency, which runs the GSI, denied these claims on Thursday, saying that it "is not involved in any initiative related to the possibility of recording conversations of ministers of the Federal Supreme Court."

Bolsonaro's office did not respond to CNN's request for comment.

In reaction to do Val's statements during a session of the Senate this Thursday, the son of the former president, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, said that "it is necessary to make clarifications so that the narratives do not surpass the facts."

"The fact is that on December 31, President Bolsonaro left the presidency," he added.

Lula narrowly won the Brazilian presidency in a runoff in October, but many of Bolsonaro's supporters have refused to accept the results, their rejection culminating in an attack on government buildings in Brasilia on January 8.

Bolsonaro himself did not publicly acknowledge the election results until December 30.

Silveira, a former police officer whose term in Congress ended this week, was arrested Thursday on unrelated charges after allegedly failing to comply with court orders and tampering with his electronic ankle monitor, the result of a 2021 conviction for undemocratic acts.
