Not far from the metropolis of New York, a Republican district councilor in the US state of New Jersey has apparently been killed by several shots.
As reported by the US media, 30-year-old Eunice Dwumfour succumbed to her serious injuries early Wednesday evening in Parlin near the town of Sayreville.
Earlier there had been reports of gunshots in the area.
The police initially did not name the background or a possible motive for the crime.
It was also unclear whether the incident could be politically motivated.
Dwumfour was reportedly found in her car, which may have rolled down a sloping road after the crime before eventually colliding with two other cars.
The Republican was first elected to the Sayreville County Council for a three-year term in 2021, ousting a Democratic incumbent.
According to the New York Times, Dwumfour was a single mother and had only married a few months before.
"Our hearts are broken"
"Our hearts are broken and we all want an answer," Republican Karen Bailey Bebert said, according to the AP news agency.
She had supported Dwumfour in the election campaign.
Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick spoke of a "disgusting criminal act."
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said he was shocked by the incident.
Dwumfour has built a solid reputation as a dedicated member of the District Council.
In the past, Dwumfour had cited good public safety in Parlin as one of the reasons for moving there.
Her interest in security policy also led her to run for county council, according to the AP news agency.
There she acted, among other things, as a contact person for the local police authorities.
