After Chile's extradition request, the Mapuche activist was taken from Bariloche to a federal prison. Meanwhile, the government of Gabriel Boric is following the process for him to serve his sentence.

In the midst of strong security measures, Facundo Jones Huala was transferred this Friday morning by federal forces from the police station in Bariloche where he had been since the beginning of the week to a federal prison in Esquel.

This was reported to

Clarín

by national and provincial sources who indicated that the operation began at 7 in the morning with great rigor and the Mapuche activist will be housed in unit 14 of the Esquel Prison "Subalcaide Abel Rosario Muñoz."

The Court of First Instance and Guarantee of Rio Bueno, in Chile, granted this Thursday the request for the extradition of

Facundo Jones Huala

to Argentina so that he could return to that country and serve a six-year prison sentence and another three that he had been given. given for an event that occurred in 2013.

With the acceptance of the Chilean judge Claudio Thomas, the leader of the Mapuche Ancestral Resistance (RAM), who is detained in a Bariloche police station and waiting to be transferred to a federal establishment,

is once again one step closer to his extradition.

It is expected that this Friday they will transfer him

to a federal prison in Esquel.

Judge

Thomas accepted the request of the Río Bueno prosecutor's office, and the analysis of the case must now be confirmed or not by the Court of Appeals.

The magistrate said that a date will be requested for the analysis of the case as soon as possible.

If the court ratifies the extradition request of Judge Thomas, the request is passed to the Chilean Foreign Ministry so that, through the ambassador of the government of Gabriel Boric in Buenos Aires, Barbaras Figueroa, it is transmitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina.

Huala, who was born in 1986 in Bariloche, and has been the protagonist of numerous incidents and crimes in Chile and Argentina

together with the most radicalized Mapuches.

Facundo Jones Huala, arrested.

The Hearing for the extradition request was held by the prosecutor of Río Bueno, Sergio Fuentes Paredes.

And the judge agreed and also considered that

"there is sufficient reason to order his arrest and deprivation of liberty."

He can run away again, he considered.

The federal court of Bariloche agreed to the preventive detention of Jones Huala after an international arrest request that came from Interpol Chile to Interpol Argentina.

The last chapter of Jones Huala took place at dawn last Monday when he was arrested in a neighborhood of El Bolsón, drunk, with long, disheveled hair, a bruise in one eye and dressed in a woman's skirt and blouse. and in slippers.

On Wednesday it was reported that he was on a hunger strike, but his release was denied because, among other reasons, he was already under an international arrest warrant.

He had been a fugitive for almost a year because the Supreme Court had revoked his probation last January with a ban on leaving Chile and in February he disappeared.

The Public Ministry of Río Negro, in the southern province of Argentina, this week transferred the detention of Jones Huala to the Federal Court of Bariloche, which must decide in which security unit he will be imprisoned.

In Bariloche there is no federal prison, but there is

in Esquel, where the Mapuche activist will be transferred this Friday.

There he was also detained between 2017 and 2018,

where he had a first extradition process from Argentina to justice in Chile.

Until this Thursday he was still in a mountain police station.

Prison is part of the judicial and political definition of extradition to Chile.

They have been demanding him there since he escaped in February 2022 while on probation after being sentenced to 6 years in prison for causing a fire and for carrying weapons.

The first episode in Chile took place in 2013, against the Pisú Pisué farm.

The Ministry of the Interior was present at today's hearing, which marks the willingness of the Boric government to proceed with the extradition request for his escape.

"Mr. Jones Huala had a series of facts or events throughout the crime investigation process that led to non-compliance with certain arrest warrants or that clearly demonstrated his lack of adherence to the decisions made by the court. In this context, we understand that the factual circumstances and the legal circumstances proceed to order the active extradition in the same terms in which the Public Ministry has requested them," said delegate Carlos White.

Jones Huala was represented by a public defender, Juan Pablo Alday, who said that there was no discussion about whether the requirements for extradition were met, but stressed that for preventive detention, the Prosecutor's Office had to prove the principle of double criminality in Chile and Argentina.

"The Public Ministry must prove that the acts for which my client is sentenced are punished in Argentina and have a penalty of more than one year."

The judge passed the analysis of the case to the Court of Appeals.
