There are more reef-building coral species in Hong Kong than in the entire Caribbean Sea?

The local sea area is rich in various coral species, among which there are 84 species of stony coral alone.

Coral is an important member of the earth's ecology. Coral reefs provide food and shelter for various marine life and connect different ecosystems.

However, corals are extremely sensitive to the growth environment and can only survive in a specific water temperature and water quality environment.

In recent years, climate change has led to warming of the ocean, leading to coral bleaching and even gradual death.

HSBC is committed to promoting sustainable development and fulfilling social responsibilities, and has spared no effort in supporting the social development of Hong Kong.

This time, HSBC is collaborating with World Wildlife Fund Hong Kong (WWF) and the Coral Institute of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to contribute to the local marine ecology.

Slow self-recovery of corals Artificial restoration of first aid coral fragments

Due to the very slow growth rate of corals in Hong Kong, their own resilience alone is not enough to reverse the destruction of coral habitats.

Taking the Tolo Harbor Tolo Channel as an example, the coral coverage rate has dropped by more than 90% since the early 1980s. Even after the marine environment has improved, there has been no sign of natural recovery after 20 years. Therefore, coral restoration actions are needed to speed up coral restoration. .

Vibrant corals are one of the focuses of HSBC in local marine conservation. Therefore, the "HSBC Save Local Corals Plan" is launched to donate part of the income from ESG investment products (including funds, bonds/certificates of deposit or structured products), Support the coral conservation project of WWF and the Coral Institute of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The goal of this project is to restore the damaged coral ecological environment in Tolo Harbor through transplanting coral fragments and regular monitoring, thereby increasing coral coverage and diversity. It is hoped that the transplanted coral fragments can be beneficial to marine life in Hong Kong Diversity has a positive effect.

WWF and the Coral Institute of CUHK rescued coral fragments underwater and brought them back to the coral breeding and breeding base located in the Li Fushan Marine Science Research Center for cultivation. The corals were not returned to the seabed until they grew to a certain size and were followed up regularly.

Sustainable investment in rebuilding coral communities on the seabed, giving back to society and creating long-term value

If the number of corals is declining, it will eventually affect the ecosystem.

Through ESG's investment in the "HSBC Save Local Coral Project", we can indirectly support local coral conservation.

The ESG framework covers the three major categories of environment, society and corporate governance. It helps investors evaluate the sustainability of corporate investment and identify the impact of companies on society, and promotes companies to do business in ways that are conducive to sustainable development. Improving the environment brings positive effects.

In addition, investing in ESG companies can also promote companies to protect employee welfare and fulfill social responsibilities, bringing positive impacts to the community.

Coral reefs are safe havens for many marine organisms and form rich ecosystems.

Whether it is your financial health or the health of the ocean, HSBC cares the same.

Protecting local corals needs everyone's support!

From now until March 31, 2023, HSBC will donate part of the proceeds to WWF on behalf of investors who subscribe to any ESG products (including funds, bonds/certificates of deposit or structured products), and immediately participate in the "HSBC Save Local Corals" Project" to support the coral restoration and conservation projects of WWF and the Coral Institute of CUHK, and work together to rebuild colorful homes for marine life.
