The most expensive suite in the world, the one that hosted some of the biggest celebrities ever - from the King of Rock and Roll to the President of the United States - remains intact as if it were frozen in time. The Starworld Hotel Suite in Houston, Texas, today looks like a time capsule from the 1970s, more than 20 years since mysteriously closed.

The penthouse was the brainchild of former mayor Roy Hoffinz, who built a Disneyland-style resort called the Astrodomain. The resort boasted the Astroworld theme park, a huge stadium called the Astrodome - nicknamed the "Eighth Wonder of the World" - and a quartet of hotels. Who overlooked all This beauty was the "Heavenly Suite" of the Starworld Hotel, where US President Lyndon Johnson, Frank Sinatra, Muhammad Ali and Michael Jackson, among others, were guests.

Harper Goff, Oscar-winning set designer and Disneyland visionary, was hired to fill the interiors with antique furniture with Tiffany glass and 24-karat gold.

The suite included 6 bedrooms, each designed in a different theme, a two-story nightclub, a library and a dining room - including a private elevator to room service.

The suite was so spectacular and opulent that one guest named Elvis Presley said he found the place "too flashy".

The suite was awarded the prestigious title of "the most expensive suite in the world" by the Guinness Book of Records in 1977 and how much did all this pleasure cost then?

Around $2,500 per night.

The hotel itself remains in operation under the Wyndham brand, but the luxury penthouse was closed to guests as early as the 1990s.

Now new photos show the world's most expensive hotel room that today appears to be remarkably well-preserved.

Township researcher Lance Bradford photographed the suite and provided new photos of the slightly faded "Her Majesty".

In his photos - which he publishes on his Instagram page - the beds are still made, the library remains stocked with books and the chairs are still standing around the kitchen table.

He said: "It's not open to the public. The place isn't exactly locked behind bars, but to get in, you have to think 'creative', let's say. The design is from the late sixties and hasn't been touched at all, as far as I know, although the hotel itself has been Several owners since then. I can only imagine that the top floor was kept that way because it was very expensive to tear it all down - or the owners have plans to make money off the nostalgia of the period."

He added: "The furniture, accessories, flooring and even the books in the library are beautifully preserved.

It's not like most of the 60 year old buildings I've photographed.

There is no water damage or that kind of warping and cracking that is usually caused by the oppressive humidity in Houston.

The windows were kept sealed and the air circulation system functional so the heat wasn't a factor either.

It's incredibly rare to find something like this."

Hoffaintz, known as "The Judge", lived in the suite from its completion in 1969 until 1973, when a fire that broke out two floors below startled him - and he moved into the mansion. He died of a heart attack in 1982, when he was 70.

To this day it is not clear when the suite was closed, although there are hints of it.

PaperCity magazine revealed it was available for $5,500 a night in November 1996, citing a Houston Chronicle article.

The magazine added that the penthouse's private night club served as a jazz club in "the next decade".

At the same time, a 2013 article from Houston-based television station ABC13 said the suite had been "closed for more than a decade."

Starworld closed its doors for the last time on October 30, 2005 and was demolished by the following summer.

The Astrodome is still standing, although it has been closed to the public since 2008 due to fire safety violations.

It served as a shelter for refugees fleeing Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Today the Arstodomain is called NRG Park, with NRG Stadium - built in 2002 - now serving as its main venue.
