The Minister of Health, Dr. Hassan Al-Ghobash, confirmed in a statement to the Syrian Arab Republic on behalf of the member states of the Eastern Mediterranean Region, regarding the polio program, that work is taking great steps to eradicate the wild virus in most countries, as work would have been continuing to reach this goal had it not been for the Covid-19 epidemic, which negatively affected the population. that.

Minister Al-Ghobash indicated several steps that must be taken to eradicate polio, including securing the vaccine and financing for national campaigns, monitoring acute flaccid paralysis for early detection, and integrating the polio program into the expanded vaccination program and primary health care, which ensures optimal access to children, indicating the importance of providing support to obtain a structure. Infrastructure to ensure that the disease does not occur, and to ensure environmental surveillance in all countries to detect any type of polio virus in sanitation before an outbreak occurs.

The Minister of Health explained the importance of treating all countries the same, in terms of securing the oral and muscular paralysis vaccine, and carrying out house-to-house campaigns in high-risk areas, while ensuring awareness-raising, spreading basic messages, and benefiting from the experiences of countries that eradicated the disease from them, stressing the need to work on transparency. The new vaccines, because of the rumors they cause, and work to expedite stopping all types of oral polio vaccine and increasing the production of muscular paralysis vaccine to cover the increasing need for it and activating the role of community surveillance.

Dr. Al-Ghobash pointed out the need to impose legal measures in Member States on advertisements and sales of low-quality and adulterated medical products, within the framework of regulatory tasks in the post-marketing phase, pointing out that Member States in the region will participate in the ongoing discussions on the mechanism regarding medical products. low-quality and adulterated, and related future activities.

Al-Ghobash urged the organization to continue facilitating the exchange of experiences at all levels regarding substandard and falsified medical products, providing technical training on prevention, detection and response to them, providing technical support to identify gaps in national legislation and regulatory structures, and establishing a better system for regional communication and dissemination of information.

It is noteworthy that the World Health Assembly unanimously elected Syria in May 2021, during its seventy-fourth session, to membership in the Executive Council of the World Health Organization, representing the Eastern Mediterranean Region, for a period of three years.
