Paraglider pilot Zhong Xuhua disappeared while flying in Pak Kung Au, Lantau Island 4 years ago, and was found dead 5 days later.

The Coroner's Court held an inquiry into the incident earlier, revealing that the police and the Fire Department initially only relied on the mobile phone signal of the telecommunication provider to determine the location of the clock. Later, the family members used GPS data analysis to locate the clock in the south of Dadongshan, and they did not find him until the 6th day. .

The jury today (3rd) unanimously ruled that Chung's death was accidental.

The jury also made a number of suggestions, including: the Civil Aviation Department should regulate paraglider pilots to carry positioning devices; the police and firefighters should improve information technology search and rescue techniques in search and rescue training, etc.

The deceased Zhong Xuhua (41 years old) went missing after paragliding in Pak Kung Au, Lantau Island on July 22, 2018. He was found in the south of Dadong Mountain 5 days later (27th) and was confirmed dead.

After Zhong disappeared, his wife and the police searched in different ways

The incident happened on July 22, 2018. Zhong Xuhua (41 years old), who has multiple paragliding qualifications, disappeared after paragliding on Lantau Island.

His wife, Chen Lishan, returned to Hong Kong from France the next day and used the Google Timeline function to obtain her husband's GPS data, but at first the police only tried to locate the clock's mobile phone through the telecommunications provider.

Zhong was found not far from the coordinates provided by his wife

On the 5th day (26th) of the search and rescue operation, Chung’s former colleague Huang Zhongxin assisted her in analyzing the GPS data, and successfully locked two coordinates, which were handed over to the police for follow-up in the afternoon of the same day, but the police failed to open the relevant file for a while. A helicopter will be dispatched on the same day until the noon of the next day to finally find Zhong's body within 20 meters from the coordinates.

There are low-level clouds in the location where the pilot failed to go

Antony Dominic Thorpe, senior executive pilot of the flight service team who found Chung, recalled that during the first five days of search and rescue operations, Chung was in a location so low in the clouds that the helicopter had never been there.

On the morning of the 27th, he was carrying out another mission. On his return trip, he saw the clouds rising and stopped by to search over the place. He found the bell on a ridge of Dadong Mountain. He believed that he found it out of luck and intuition.

The chief of the fire department said he had never heard of the coordinates before

Li Weiming, the assistant chief of the fire department, said that he only received the coordinate file on the evening of the 26th, but "had never heard about the coordinates before." However, due to the unstable weather at the time, he did not immediately send personnel to search and rescue, and it was discussed by all parties in the morning After that, a helicopter search and rescue was dispatched.

Huang said he had personally gone to the command center to explain

Huang Zhongxin, who had assisted in finding the coordinates, said that she passed the coordinates to Chen on the afternoon of the 26th, but was told that the coordinates were still ignored the next day, and decided to go to the command center to explain in person, and was finally followed up.

Coroner Ho Junyao explained to the jury that there were discrepancies between the two statements, and it was for the jury to decide whether someone lied or disregarded the information.

Forensic doctor says clock or death shortly after hitting mountain

Forensic doctor Lin Weiguo pointed out that Chung had died a few days before he was found. There were many lacerations on his body, and his internal organs showed signs of corruption. There were maggots and other insects in the wound. It is believed that he died shortly after the distress, and it is judged that he died of multiple injuries to the body.

Official jury to consider two possible verdicts

When leading the jury yesterday, He Guan mentioned that the evidence showed that Zhong was injured in many places, and he was believed to have died within a short period of time. It is inferred that the weather turned bad after he took off, and the wind direction was not suitable for flying. He then entered the clouds and lost the paraglider. Control, and finally crashed into the hillside at 2 o'clock in the afternoon of the same day.

Based on the degree of corruption of his body, it can be inferred that Zhong had been dead for more than 3 days when he was found, but within a week.

If the jury accepts the above reasoning, he can be ruled "accidental" or "doubtful" otherwise.
