Promises from plastic: the tax has decreased - but the price of disposable utensils remains high Israel today

2023-02-03T09:06:18.754Z

There is no news: despite the cancellation of the tax - according to the "Israel Hayom" test, in most chains the prices remained the same • Where did the prices go down anyway? Osher at and Berami Levy • "It's a process, it will take time to lower prices"

The cancellation of the one-time tax, following the directive of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, went into effect on Tuesday, but as of yesterday - we still do not see the effect of its cancellation on prices.

The suppliers claim that the branches still have inventory on which tax has been paid, and blame the state for this.

It is also claimed that despite this they have already started lowering the prices, and that they are expected to drop gradually and return to the previous situation.

According to Rami Sher Shalom, CEO of the Paamit Group, "The previous government imposed the tax on inventory all at once, which created an immediate change in the market, and as a result they had to raise prices in the entire market.

Now the tax was not returned to those who had stock left.

It's an ongoing process until the prices are lowered and new stock arrives.

There are items for which it will take weeks, and some for which it will take months."

The suppliers absorb

Another supplier says: "When they decided on the customs, they did a stock count, including in the warehouses, and they took customs from us at the same time they raised the tax. Disposable tools are an import, it's not from now to now, it takes a month just to bring it. The main import is from China, and some is imported From Turkey. Just as we were told to pay customs duty, they should have said that there is now a stock count and that they would pay us back the customs duty - then the price would have dropped to the consumer immediately."

On the other hand, a source in the Treasury says that the announcement of the intention to cancel the tax was already made a month ago, and that the suppliers had time to prepare.

He also says that on Tuesday at midnight the tax was canceled, and that in the coming weeks it will be possible to finish the inventory and connect to the rest of the market, which has already lowered prices.

Shalom Naaman, CEO and owner of the market warehouses: "The price of the disposable dishes consists of cost price, tax and margin.

The tax was cancelled, and on the other hand the inventory consists of an old tax that we paid in advance.

We will arrive at the price without tax according to the depreciation in the inventory."

Rami Levy, owner of Rami Levy Sycamore Marketing: "We lowered the prices last Wednesday, and some were already lowered on Tuesday. We lowered almost everything, even though we paid tariffs on the one-time. We absorb it to be good to our consumers."
