More than two decades ago, Jennifer Lopez changed the internet forever when she wore a dress so stunning that it inspired engineers to create "Google Image Search."

It was at the 2000 Grammy Awards ceremony that Versace's emerald green and blue palm leaf gown became one of the most enduring outfits in fashion history.

Cut provocatively low, the neckline of the dress reached past Lopez's belly button and had a revealing center slit.

Each step she took caused a spectacular flurry of chiffon behind her, keeping viewers questioning the structural integrity of her dress.

“The dress was provocative enough, I guess, to pique people's interest,” Lopez told

magazine years later, on her dress's 20th anniversary. “When it opened, everyone was like, ' What will happen now?

Nothing.

It's all taped down."

The dress became the most searched query on Google at the time, according to the company's former CEO and CEO Eric Schmidt.

"People wanted more than just text," she wrote for Project Syndicate, an opinion commentary publication, in 2015. "But we had no surefire way to get users exactly what they wanted: JLo in that dress. So she was born. Google Image Search".

In the days before Google image search, any page of results consisted entirely of website links and text.

The scandalous Versace dress, a pop culture moment that had to be seen to be understood, exposed a void in the search engine's offer.

The tool was released in July 2001.

The now-iconic dress was one of three that her stylist Andrea Lieberman presented to Lopez before the awards show.

And while this green garment has become synonymous with Lopez, she wasn't the first celeb to wear it.

Her designer Donatella Versace first wore it to the 1999 Met Gala, and later Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell wore it to the 2000 NRJ Music Awards, just a month before Lopez.

But neither of the two occasions had caused as much of a stir as when JLo wore it to the Grammys.

To mark the 20th anniversary of that moment, Versace sent a reimagined version of the legendary dress down the runway to close out his Spring-Summer 2020 show at Milan Fashion Week, enlisting the help of Lopez once again to bring it to life. to the garment

When the audience saw the updated dress (now sleeveless, with even more daring cut-outs at the hip and embellished with sequins), she stood up and applauded.

"It was incredible," Lopez said after the show, "the power of a moment in time, the power of fashion."
