The Ministry of Culture and the Syrian General Authority for Books and the Syrian Cultural Center mourned the death of writer and translator Dr. Nizar Oyoun Al-Soud at the age of 78, after a career of giving that spanned over five decades in the field of translation and creativity.

Dr. Oyoun Al-Soud was born in Homs in 1945. He received his university education at the Higher Institute of Culture in Leningrad, obtained a master’s degree in educational sciences in 1970, and obtained a doctorate in social psychology from the Soviet Union in 1983. He held the position of cultural advisor in the Syrian General Authority for Books in the Ministry of Culture. For 5 years, he also worked as a teacher at the Faculty of Education at Damascus University and other Arab universities.

Black Eyes practiced translation systematically and scientifically, making it his favorite hobby since 1973. He also mastered the French and Russian languages, but excelled in his mother tongue. He published many books, studies, research and translated articles in Syrian and Arabic publishing houses, newspapers and literary and cultural magazines in the fields of philosophy, education, psychology and literature. and theatre, and supervised many master's and doctoral dissertations.

Black Eyes won an award for translation and international understanding in Doha in 2019 for the book (War has no female face) by Svetlana Alexievich for Mamdouh Adwan House in 2016. He also translated for the same author (Used Time - The End of the Red Man) also published by Mamdouh Adwan House in 2018.

He emerged as one of the most important Syrian and Arab translators who were preoccupied with translating the masterpieces of literature written in Dostoevsky's language into the language of Dhad, so that he has more than fifty translated books in his creative balance today.

Among his translations issued by the Ministry of Culture are “Studies in Literature and Theater” for a group of authors in 1976 and “Dostoevsky - Studies in His Literature and Thought” which was published in two editions 1979 and then 2010, and Yuri Bondarev’s novel (The Game) 1990, and “Thinking and Creativity” (2011). Among his recent translations are the book “Dostoevsky’s Personality” (2017) and “The Russian Satirical Short Story.” It was published in two editions, one by the Ministry and the other by Dar Al-Mada.

Black Eyes excelled in translating books that bear in their contents the same specialization in social psychology, so he translated “Critique of Contemporary Bourgeois Sociology” published by “Damascus House in 1973” and “The Doctrine of Psychoanalysis and the New Freudian Philosophy” from Dar Al-Farabi and Dar Al-Wathba and “Hypnosis” ( Dar Yarub, 1996), and “Eros and Culture - Philosophy of Love and European Art” (Dar Al-Mada, 2010), “Psychology of Family Relationships” (Dar Kanaan) and “Psychology of the Body” (Dar Kanaan, 2014).
