"El Embarcadero",
as the iconic tower located at the second level crossing of the
Francisco Alvarez station, in the Moreno District, is called,
carries different versions of its past and what it represents for the people of the
West of Greater Buenos Aires .
The emblematic tower was built
in 1947 by Francisco Pedro Álvarez,
eldest son of
Nemesio Francisco Álvarez
, founder of the city, with the clear objective of serving as
a service station, lodging and resting place for those who made extensive trips
from somewhere .
distant towards the city of Luján.
Today it is an abandoned building that they say from the commune
will be restored,
without even details of the start of work or if it will be a
Cultural Center or Museum.
Residents of the area say that at the top of El Embarcadero,
practically the entire city of Moreno could be seen
and they also say that they even communicated with friends or family through this place.
Various versions frame the building that was built in 1947.
At the time of being projected, the tower had been designed
as a symbol of the YPF stations
so that it could be seen by motorists
, but the project was stopped in 1950
, leaving only the tower and part of its structure.
During those years
it was used as a ramp for loading cattle and dairy products on freight trains
that passed through the town.
Over the decades, the accounts of the function and of what happened inside the tower are diverse:
from stories linked to hideouts for the Montoneros movements during the 70s
to tales about an alleged crash of a small plane that It had caused damage to the structure.
It is true that not everyone believes in these stories, most do not know / do not answer and many doubt.
"It was not a pier, nor did it have any other use than being a frustrated attempt to establish a service station there that was abandoned unfinished. The years passed and there are the ruins of the building. People later generated a myth," he says a skeptical neighbor.
It was built by the son of the founder of the town, Francisco Pedro Álvarez, with the aim of being a service station that was never carried out.
After many twists and turns, in the 1990s the
Municipality of Moreno decided to become the owner of the space,
although without defining what to do in the historic construction.
The building deteriorated over the years
to such an extent that several neighbors filed complaints about it.
In 2022 months they presented a project
for El Embarcadero to be converted into a civic center
where procedures are carried out.
Everything seems to indicate that this representative space for those born in Moreno will once again form part of society.
The truth is that from the Commune they confirm that the emblematic building
is going to be restored, without details of what will happen next
.
They express that the only thing that can be affirmed so far is that it
will be open to the community,
but it is not defined whether as a Cultural Center with workshops or simply to be visited as a small Museum.
