Greco was part of the 'Ndrangheta (Calabrian mafia) and was convicted in absentia of the 1990s murder of two brothers from a rival clan who were presumed dissolved in acid, according to witnesses.
Anti-mafia police say he was convicted of the murder of the brothers Stefano and Giuseppe Bartolomeo.
Greco had adopted a new identity, Paolo Dimitrio, in France despite being on Italy's most wanted list for 16 years.
He even appeared in a local French newspaper as an "authentic Italian pizza maker," according to Italian press reports.
