Former Knesset Speaker Shabach Weiss passed away today (Saturday) at the age of 87. Weiss was a professor of political science, served as a member of the Knesset and Speaker of the 13th Knesset, served as Israel's ambassador to Poland and later served as chairman of the Yad Vashem Council.



Weiss was born on July 5, 1935 in Poland, which today is known as Lviv district in Ukraine, he survived the Holocaust with his family members when he was hidden by two women.

His family members, his parents and two brothers, found hiding in their Ukrainian neighbor's house.



In 1947 Weiss immigrated to Israel, after his military service he began studying political science at the Hebrew University and completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in 1961.

After that he studied law at the Higher School of Law and Economics in Tel Aviv.

In 1969, he completed his doctoral studies in the field of political science at the Hebrew University, with the subject of his research being the local government in Israel.

Upon receiving his doctorate, Weiss began serving as a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Tel Aviv University and the University of Haifa, where he also served as head of the department for two years, and at the same time began to engage in politics.

Weiss was a member of the Haifa City Council in 1969-1981, a member of the Finance Committee, the Culture Committee and the management of the Haifa Theater.



Weiss served as a member of the Knesset on behalf of the Labor Party for 18 years from 1988 to 1999. In the 10th Knesset he was elected for the first time and served as a member of the Law, Constitution and Justice Committee.

In the 13th Knesset he was elected to be the Speaker of the Knesset.


Before the elections to the 15th Knesset, Weiss was ranked low in the primaries and did not enter the Knesset, and was appointed Israel's ambassador to Poland.



In 1995 he was awarded the title of "Dearest of the Movement for the Beautiful Land of Israel" and in 2001 he was awarded the Movement for the Quality of Government Award.

He received the Tolerance Award from the Polish government in 2002. In 2003 he was awarded the highest badge of honor in Poland by the President of the country.

Weiss wrote more than 20 books in the fields of his scientific expertise and the fields of quizzes.

In the elections to the 18th Knesset, he was placed in the symbolic 114th place on the labor list for the Knesset, and in the elections to the 19th Knesset, he was placed in the 116th place on its list.
