The CHP said it was investigating an imported case of monkeypox involving a 40-year-old male patient with good past health who had visited Japan from January 14 to 24.
Mouth ulcers developed on January 31, and low-grade fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and rashes on hands, trunk, and genitals developed on February 1.
He consulted a private doctor that day and went to the Accident and Emergency Department of Yan Chai Hospital on February 3 for medical treatment. He was then transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital.
The hospital arranged for him to be admitted to the isolation ward for separate isolation. He is currently in a stable condition.
The Public Health Laboratory Services Branch of the Center for Health Protection confirmed today that the patient's sample was tested positive for monkeypox virus.
Preliminary investigations revealed that he had high-risk contacts during the incubation period during his stay in Japan.
According to the information provided by the patient, he did not know any monkeypox-confirmed patients while he was abroad, and he had no high-risk contacts after returning to Hong Kong.
As a precaution, the center has arranged for two family members of the patient to be quarantined and receive post-exposure vaccination.
He has no close contacts since the onset of symptoms.
Epidemiological investigation is still in progress.
