The conflict over the delivery of 25,000 hectares to the Mapuches in Mendoza grows: the governor will go to court against Nation

2023-02-04T15:06:59.309Z

Rodolfo Suarez warned that they are lands with oil wells and that there is a "political intention" to harm the province. He spoke of "the complicity of Kirchnerism with pseudo Mapuche."

The Governor of Mendoza,

 Rodolfo Suarez

announced

that he

will go to court

to stop the national government's decision to

hand over 25,000 hectares to the Mapuche communities

.

In those lands, he warned, there are

unconventional

crude oil wells that are part of the

Vaca Muerta field

, in the south of the province.

The provincial president warned that "a million-dollar investment for exploration and production activities by YPF" is being developed in these areas.

In this regard, he denounced the

"political intention"

of the Frente de Todos government to "harm Mendoza."

"It exposes

the complicity of Kirchnerism with these pseudo-Mapuches

," denounced Suarez, and anticipated that he will make judicial presentations before the National Institute of Indigenous Affairs (INAI) itself and before the Justice.

"This clearly

aggravates the situation

. Not only by ceding an area full of provincial assets, but because it

exposes the interests

to dominate the local resources and stop the hydrocarbon, tourism, employment and investment development projected for the South," he concluded. the governor in a series of tweets where he also showed the maps of the areas in question.

The strong rejection by the Mendoza administration refers to Resolution No. 042/2023 published on January 27 in the Official Gazette, in which the national government recognizes "the current, traditional and public occupation of the lof Suyai community Levfv, belonging to the Mapuche People, and who have a seat in towns in the Mendoza departments of San Rafael and Malargüe".

Last Monday, the governor himself instructed the provincial authorities to carry out the necessary procedures in order to

declare the unconstitutionality

of the national resolutions granting land in the south of the province to Mapuche communities.

He requested it "urgently" in a note sent to Mendoza's government adviser, Ricardo Canet.

In turn, it stated that the administrative acts of the Nation were executed

"without any intervention or participation of the Province of Mendoza"

, and insisted that "the result of their validity will seriously affect the patrimony of the province".

The following day,

national deputies from the province presented a project

requesting that the National Government, through INAI, provide details on the recognition of land occupation.

"We want to know why the Government expressly recognizes

that

these territories belong to the original peoples, while it has not yet been determined if they are communities and do not even have legal status. And why it was decided that the territories are ancestral, ignoring what what the Mendoza justice system says," said Pamela Verasay (UCR).

The author of the project also expressed her concern about the lack of legal status and the absence of intervention in the province.

"There is a decision by a body of the National Executive Power that goes against the Provincial Executive Power," she added.

The initiative aims to obtain more information regarding the registration in the National Registry of Indigenous Communities (RENACI), as well as the reasons why the registration has not yet been carried out, more than 9 years after the start.

The support of Together for Change

Alfredo Cornejo, Gerado Morales and Miguel Ángel Pichetto

were the first opposition leaders to come out to express their claim.

Like Suarez, the president of the Juntos por el Cambio interblock in the Senate pointed out that within the territory ceded to the "self-perceived Mapuche" groups

there are more than 20 oil wells.

The senator also warned about "the very serious institutional lack" of the Government.

"They violate the right to private property, since these lands have owners," questioned the opposition legislator.

For his part, the governor of Jujuy criticized that

the government "rewarded the same pseudo-Mapuches that set fires and sow violence in Patagonia

."

The radical described the situation as "an violation of national sovereignty."

For his part, former senator and auditor Pichetto described the transfer as

"a betrayal of the country."

And he exclaimed: "It shows a disempowerment of the national territory and our sovereignty. If we are a government in 2024 this will end."
