The former Speaker of the Knesset, Professor Shevah Weiss, passed away this morning (Saturday) at the age of 87. He left behind two children and a granddaughter.
Shevah Weiss was born in Boryslav in Poland (today in Lviv Oblast of Ukraine).
He survived the holocaust with his family members when they were hidden by two Hasidic Olam nations.
After the war, his family members migrated and finally immigrated to Israel in 1947.
Weiss served in the army and worked as an investigator, among other things he also worked for Kol Israel.
Professor Weiss lectured at the University of Haifa and researched the government system in Israel, at the local and national level.
He authored dozens of books in the fields of his scientific expertise and in the field of the Holocaust.
As part of his public activity, he was a member of the Haifa Municipality Council between 1969-1981 and was then elected to the Knesset.
He served between the years 1988-1992 as the deputy speaker of the Knesset, and between the years 1992-1996 he served as the speaker of the 13th Knesset.
