"Cruelty, contempt and the lack of compassion":

on Khaled Arscheid, 52 years old, who pretended to be a plumber and thus broke into the apartments of the elderly, several prison sentences were imposed in the past, but they failed to dissuade him from his actions.

In recent days, he was sentenced to another five and a half years in prison after committing similar acts against helpless complainants in their apartments.

"The accused went from victim to victim without any hindrance and robbed not only the victim's money and property but also his honor," wrote Judge Ronit Poznanski Katz in the sentencing in which she also ordered that he must compensate all the elderly with approximately NIS 16,000.

According to the indictment, which was filed by the claims unit of the Tel Aviv Police, the accused arrived at six residential apartments of elderly people in the city of Tel Aviv and Haifa, and after the elderly opened the door, he introduced himself as a worker who came to check the sewage system in the complainants' apartments or as someone who lives in the same building and wants to renovate his apartment's plumbing.

After the defendant broke in and entered the apartments of the elderly, the defendant stole their property and left the place.

In one of the cases, it was elderly people using walkers when he pushed the elderly man, burst into the apartment, entered the bedroom, took off his pants and stole 5,000 shekels from them while the elderly man begged him not to do so.

In another case, the defendant took her purse from an elderly woman's bag and took NIS 800 from there.

After drinking and eating he left the apartment.

In another case, he entered the apartment of a disabled woman who told him she couldn't move around the apartment, and he went through and stole hundreds of shekels from her husband's pants, and when he also stole from her bag, she noticed him and he ran away.

Thus he continued in three more cases to impersonate a plumber and steal from the elderly.

During the arguments for the punishment, the representative of the police's claims unit stated that the potential harm of a meeting between the burglar and the victim could have been easily realized since the complainants are all elderly and some of them even use aids to get around and therefore any "hit" could have ended in disaster.

He also added that the defendant had a heavy past and was only released in December 2021 after serving a lengthy prison term for committing a series of similar offenses.

Moreover, the defendant committed the offenses attributed to him and continued to harm the elderly while a burdensome conditional sentence was hanging over his head.

"The defendant's cynical and cruel exploitation of his elderly victims, some of whom even suffer from disabilities."

Judge Poznanski Katz, stated in the decision after hearing the complainants that they had suffered a great injustice, and that the defendant's actions left them with a strong sense of victimhood.

"These are elderly people, one of whom was assisted by a wheelchair and arrived in the courtroom with his grandson, and it was obvious that the whole situation is not easy for them," wrote Judge Poznansky, adding: "If it is necessary to point out a thread that connects all the offenses, it is the defendant's cynical and cruel exploitation of his elderly victims some of whom even suffer from disabilities. Unlike many property crimes that are being tried before me, he committed the crimes of assault against helpless victims, the elderly, some of them disabled, with limited mobility. The accused took advantage of their kindness, their innocence, their advanced age and their physical disability. With sophistication, planning, cruelty, With disdain, in the absence of compassion, the accused hit his innocent victims again and again."
