The teachers' union strike began this morning (Sunday) in post-secondary institutions across the country.

The strike does not include the special education schools.

The strike went into effect after it was announced on Friday by the chairman of the organization Ran Erez, who claimed that they decided to start a warning strike after the Ministry of Finance withdrew the negotiations on teachers' salaries.

"After a whole year of giving opportunities to the ministries of finance and education to conduct substantive negotiations with the teachers' organization regarding the salaries of secondary education teachers, water came to a head," the organization's chairman, Ran Erez, said on Friday.

"The demand of the teachers' organization is that the salary of a teacher starting in secondary education should be NIS 12,000," he stated.

According to him, "The Ministry of Finance disrespects the teachers and the decisions of the National Labor Court, which several times ordered the state to hold meaningful and continuous negotiations and reach agreements regarding teachers' salaries.

The Ministry of Finance is abusing the patience shown by the teachers' organization for a whole year and dragging its feet on purpose."

The national parent leadership expressed its opposition to the strike.

"We support the teachers' demand for an increase in their salary, but are strongly opposed to any strike and harm to the students. We call on the Ministry of Finance and the teachers' organization to sit down for immediate negotiations, in accordance with the instructions of the Labor Court.

Israeli students should not suffer because of the teachers' salary struggles.

We will not accept strikes as a work method that harms the students first and foremost."
