– The alarm reached the Leitzachtal mountain rescue service on Friday morning at 11:09 a.m.

By that time, a ski tourer had already survived the worst: he had made the emergency call himself after he had freed himself from an avalanche, reports Marinus Gruber.

The spokesman for the mountain rescue service explains: "A ski tourer was hit by an avalanche on the east side of the Croda Rossa, swept away about 200 meters in altitude and partially buried."

Helicopter drops mountain rescuers on avalanche cone

The athlete was able to free himself and make an emergency call, whereupon the mountain rescue operations manager requested the rescue helicopter Christoph 1 from Munich.

Thus, two mountain rescuers were dropped off directly at the avalanche cone.

"The injured person was initially cared for, placed in a recovery bag and flown to the Agatharied hospital with the emergency doctor who was subsequently dispatched," reports Gruber.

The mountain rescuers then skied down into the valley.

The operation ended at around 2:30 p.m.
