Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has died

The four-star general took over as head of Pakistan in 1999. In more than seven years in office, he oversaw a period of economic growth while escaping at least three assassination attempts.


Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has died in Dubai aged 79 after a long illness, the army said on Sunday.

Senior military officials “

express their sincere condolences on the death of General Pervez Musharraf

,” said a brief statement issued by the army press service.

May Allah bless the soul of the deceased and give strength to the bereaved family

."

The four-star general died on Sunday morning at a hospital in Dubai, media said.

I can confirm that the late general breathed his last in Dubai this morning... He is no more

," a senior security official also told AFP, on condition of anonymity.

General Musharraf took over as head of Pakistan in 1999 in a non-violent coup after then-prime minister Nawaz Sharif tried to remove him as army chief.

In more than seven years in office, he oversaw a period of economic growth while escaping at least three assassination attempts.
