The former president of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf, passed away today (Sunday) at the age of 79 in a hospital in Dubai.
His associates claim that he died after dealing with a "prolonged illness".
Musharraf is considered a pro-Western president who helped the United States in the war on terrorism in Afghanistan.
He offered India a peace plan aimed at ending the military rivalry between the countries and even agreed to give up Pakistan's sovereignty in Kashmir.
Musharraf showed relative openness to contacts with Israel and the Pakistani foreign minister met with the Israeli foreign minister at his behest.
In 2005 he met with the Prime Minister of Israel at the time, Ariel Sharon, and shook his hand.
Musharraf came to power in a military coup in 1999 and his rule is considered stable and one that catapulted Pakistan's economy forward significantly.
But the period of his reign was also characterized by incessant battles with the courts and the murder of the opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.
He was exiled from his country in 2014 after a trial was held against him on suspicion of murder and treason.
He was convicted in his absence in 2019 and sentenced to death.
