Temperatures in the northeastern United States dropped to a low that has not been recorded in decades on Saturday, due to the entry of arctic air into the region accompanied by strong and icy winds.
Temperatures fell to minus 20 degrees Celsius and more yesterday in Boston and Providence, according to the National Weather Service.
In New York the temperatures dropped to minus 4 and New Hampshire recorded minus 9 degrees Celsius.
A baby was killed after a tree fell on a car in Massachusetts and hit him.
The driver, the baby's aunt, was seriously injured.
At the 1,900-meter summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire, temperatures dropped to minus 43 degrees Celsius - the lowest since 1934. Strong winds created a "wind chill" effect of minus 73 degrees - the lowest ever recorded.

The bitter cold is expected to ease slightly today, but local authorities have opened heating shelters, issued warnings about frostbite and hypothermia and urged people to stay indoors.
Tens of thousands of households in New York and Maine were cut off from electricity.
"This is one of the most extreme cold waves in years," said Miro Weinberger, mayor of Burlington, Vermont.
Michelle Wu, the mayor of Boston, declared a state of emergency.
In Boston, dozens of city workers and aid agencies went out to help the homeless and convince them to find shelter from the cold.
The National Weather Service in Cariboo, Maine, tweeted on Friday that there had been reports of "frostquakes", earthquakes caused by sudden cracks in the frozen ground.
