The record was almost broken: 47,196 new cars hit the road in January 2023

2023-02-05T07:13:04.465Z

Economic slowdown, signs of recession and rising interest rates? You made the Israelis laugh. In the past month there was a 26% jump in new car deliveries compared to January last year. Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, BYD and Mitsubishi held 50% of the market, with the other half divided among no less than 57 other brands

The new car market continues to provide positive performance.

After the past year ended with a successful last quarter that was mainly due to the massive import of electric cars and their release just before the doubling of the tax, the month of January arrived and with it price increases at most car importers, but customers continued to storm the showrooms and 47,196 new cars hit the road, a figure that could have been even higher and break the previous record recorded in January 2021 (a gap of less than 1,000 cars), if the importers had not encountered a shortage of carriers to transport the vehicles from the ports to the importers' lots.

At the same time, it is important to remember that the month of January is traditionally a strong month and includes the delivery of many orders that were made in the last months of the year due to the customers' request to obtain a license for the new year, which does not yet indicate the year's performance, especially as the signs of an economic slowdown are multiplying.

At the top of the list, Hyundai continues to lead, breaking another record and putting 8,416 new cars on the road.

Kia is in second place with 4,912 deliveries, despite an 8% decrease compared to last year.

Mazda surprised with a 50% jump in deliveries and qualified for third place with 4,615 deliveries, a figure that has not been remembered for years and is mainly attributed to a large inventory that it managed to import to Israel and despite not launching new models in the past year.

Toyota loses 36% and takes fourth place in the table with 3,036 deliveries, mainly due to inventory problems in several leading models.

Rounding out the opening five is BYD, which delivered 2,999 electric cars, a figure that makes it not only the best-selling Chinese electric car in Israel, but also the best-selling electric car in recent months.

Mitsubishi jumps 47% to fifth place with 2,234 deliveries, ahead of Skoda which lost 21% and delivered 1,750 cars.

The Chinese Chery delivered 1,600 cars (all gasoline) and took seventh place, mainly thanks to the Tigo 8 Pro model equipped with 7 seats.

After a difficult year in which it suffered from substantial inventory problems, SEAT manages to renew inventories with a growth of 127% and the delivery of 1,510 cars.

Rounding out the top ten is Mercedes, which leads the luxury market with 1,467 deliveries and a jump of 28% compared to last year.

Significant increases are also recorded by Subaru with 1,447 deliveries (81%), Chevrolet with 797 deliveries (146%) and Renault with 774 deliveries (190%).

On the other hand, Nissan delivered 270 cars (62%-), Ford 135 cars (68%-) and Honda continues to disappear from the market with only 51 deliveries (-30%).

The Chinese brands continue to record accelerated penetration into the market, alongside BYD and Chery which entered the top ten, MG grew by 400% and delivered 1,281 cars, Geely grew by 443% and delivered 1,200 cars, SERES grew by 248% and delivered 174 cars and Skywall Doubles its strength and delivered 151 cars.

In the luxury Chinese market, Polestar delivered 41 cars, ahead of Hongqi with 38 deliveries and WEY with 21 deliveries.

On the other hand, JAC does not manage to rise and even fell by 53% with 17 deliveries and Lipomotor, the cheapest electric car in Israel, manages to rise slightly with 95 deliveries, but still a figure significantly lower than the importer's forecasts.

Beside Mercedes, which leads the market and made it to the top ten with 1,467 deliveries, Audi manages to fully renew some of its models and climbs to second place with 748 deliveries (34%).

BMW with 557 deliveries (-25%) is ahead of Volvo which grew by 53% to 377 deliveries.

JEEP closes the opening five with 306 deliveries (-17%). Also on the prestige list, Lexus with 244 deliveries (-15%), Genesis in a record month with 154 deliveries (35%), Cadillac with 117 deliveries (-15%) and Land Rover with 80 deliveries (8%).

At the sporty and luxury end, Masera delivered 51 cars, Maserati 16 cars, Ferrari 2 cars and Aston Martin 2 cars.

Last month, 14,900 electric cars hit the road, of which 6,927 were 100% electric cars, 5,052 were hybrids, and 2,921 were plug-in hybrid models.

The market share of the full streetcars rose to 14.6% of total sales.

And where is Tesla?

As you know, the company does not have stock in Israel, which was manifested in 3 Model S cars that arrived in a December shipment and were delivered only this month.

The next shipment is expected to be only in March and according to estimates will include several thousand cars due to the sharp price reduction in the past month.
