Following the earthquake, Roy Levy, Mayor of Nesher, in a special column for Walla! Local: "I call on all government ministries and the local government

The images of the horror continue to flow from Turkey and the death toll stands at 600 and thousands more are missing.

This is not a nightmare, this is reality.

A reality that will also occur in Israel, the question is when and what we did to be ready for when the noise hits.

Early in the morning, thousands of citizens across the country woke up to an earthquake that occurred 500 km from Israel in the northern neighbor of Turkey. The next significant earthquake in Israel is a matter of time and all the authorities have to do in this regard is to promote urban renewal as much as possible.

While the discussions revolve around the contractual profit, millions Israelis remain at risk of buildings collapsing on their heads. I call on all government ministries and the local government to do everything possible to speed up the urban renewal initiatives. This is a security need, not real estate!

These days the city of Nesher is celebrating 100 years since its establishment, from barracks next to the cement factory to a prosperous city.

As in any city with such a long history, there are houses in the city that are 60 and 70 years old that hang on a rickety pillar floor that can collapse in one earthquake.

It is important to remember that the city is crossed by the Yagor fault which is part of the Syrian-African fault, which means that the risk of being at the center of the next noise in the area is extremely significant.

The Municipality of Nesher in Hovel is doing everything in its power to assist any entrepreneur with the necessary approvals in order to renew the old neighborhoods with the understanding that this is about saving human lives and not just a profitable real estate deal.

But this is not enough! There is a need for a government policy that will accelerate the processes of urban renewal at the same time as their construction of new neighborhoods. The utilization of the existing built-up area has increased, the chance of surviving the next earthquake has increased by leaps and bounds, and we haven't even talked about the next war, which is also a matter of time. The earthquake in Turkey should be a wake-up call for all of us, both the residents and the decision-makers in the government!
