Millions of refugees live in this area, many of whom live in tents and temporary shelters.

Turkey is one of the most active seismic areas in the world.

It sits on the Anatolian Plate of the Earth's crust, which rotates counterclockwise at a speed of about 3 cm per year, and collides with nearby tectonic plates. In the 1999 earthquake, nearly 18,000 people were killed in the country.
