In Peru, at least 8 people died after an avalanche that took place this Sunday in the Arequipa region, according to the National Institute of Civil Defense.
Earlier, the technical secretary of Civil Defense of the Mariano Nicolás Valcárcel district, Wilson Gutiérrez, had estimated the death toll at 36 in statements to RPP Noticias.
However, the National Institute of Civil Defense specified that so far there are eight people killed by the mudslides in Arequipa and that there are also five missing.
The agency added that "search and rescue efforts continue."
For its part, the country's Ministry of Defense reported with a publication on its Twitter account that a helicopter went to the area with humanitarian aid and personnel for "removal and rescue work."

In addition, in a statement released this Thursday, the National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI) highlights that the Arequipa region has registered heavy rains in recent days, points out that it "monitors the situation" and asks "to keep the Operations Centers active Emergency".
