2023-02-06T18:14:06.194Z

DECRYPTION - Turkey and Syria have been shaken by an earthquake that has killed nearly 2,000 people. The region is subject to major tectonic movements.

The death toll, maddening, continues to climb.

Turkey and Syria were hit on Monday February 6 by an earthquake of magnitude 7.8, which killed nearly 2,000 people in both countries.

While the search is organized to find survivors under the rubble, the very significant damage suggests many additional victims.

The earthquake took place at 4:17 a.m. local time (1:17 a.m. Paris time), some 18 kilometers deep.

If the district of Pazarcik, in the province of Kahramanmaras, is the epicenter, the tremors were felt as far as Syria, whose border is about sixty kilometers as the crow flies.

Subsequently, the authorities identified several aftershocks near the epicenter in the hours following the earthquake, including a tremor of magnitude 7.5, still in southeastern Turkey.
