Turkey and Syria shaken by two earthquakes, at least 1,472 dead
A border region between Turkey and Syria was hit overnight by an earthquake of magnitude 7.8, then a second in the morning, of magnitude 7.5.
According to state media, more than 5,385 people were injured in Turkey, and 1,042 in Syria.
The very significant damage leaves the authorities fearing many additional victims.
The European Union, Germany and France have promised to send aid.
